Baseman Solo Show in Tel Aviv: The Sacrificing of the Cake

Gary Baseman's first solo show in Israel, The Sacrificing of the Cake/Ha'alata Shel "Uga" le'Oleh/העלתה של עוגה לעולה opens Thursday, January 8th at 8pm at Urbanix Gallery in Tel Aviv.
Baseman's show is not about birthdays or cakes. It is about self examination, observation of the past, correction and change. In a picturesque childish language and a sweetish color palette, Baseman displays a series of new works, acrylic paintings along with color pencil drawings on paper. The exhibition features the image of the dragon "Ooga" (meaning "cake" in Hebrew), slaughtered again and again by feminine nude images of erotic girls or nymphs, radiating sexuality - an allegory to the artist's struggle against his private demons from the past.
The narrative of Baseman's work in this show indicates in an almost hidden way, his struggle to release himself from the heritage of his parents, east European Holocaust survivors that raised him according to the "American Dream".  Sacrificing the dragons of the past symbolically entitles Baseman to release himself from the burden represented by his parent's world perception, allowing him to re-mold his individual path.

The show runs through March 12th.

Baseman at Art Basel Miami

Baseman at Art Basel Miami
Baseman will be out and about at Miami's Art Basel this year. . . read on for more ways to spot him live and in the flesh!

Baseman + Yogurt = Art?

Yes, it’s true. Baseman dips into Fage’s Total Artistry and Auction with a freshly painted, unique work of art (featured above), entitled The Magi of Creamy Goodness.  This painting was created especially for Fage’s partnership with GenArt Vanguard Art Fair, which also features the art of Dalek and AJ Fosik.

The three foot by four foot painting will be exhibited at GenArt's Vanguard Art Fair, and will eventually be auctioned off through eBay with 100% of proceeds from the sale to benefit the Arts for Learning program.  For more information on the eBay auction, please visit:

Baseman will also participate in Fage/GenArt's Lunch & Learn program on Saturday, December 6th.  He will teach 3rd - 7th graders the ins and outs of pencil drawing from 12:30-2:30pm.

CHARITY BY NUMBERS opening tomorrow night,

I help curate the charity art show of the year.
It is amazing.
We got over a hundred vintage paint by numbers and we have artists painting on top of them to make it their own.
All the money goes to the Alliance for Children's Rights.

Charity by Numbers , a benefit art auction for The Alliance for Children's Rights , features vintage paint-by-numbers pieces reinterpreted and transformed by a jaw-dropping lineup of leading underground fine artists including Mark Ryden & Marion Peck, Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, Todd & Kathy Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, Michael Hussar, Shag, Christian and Rob Clayton, Shepard Fairey, Andrew Brandou, Gary Panter, and many more.

Charity by Numbers will open with a private reception at
Saturday February 10th from 6 to 9 PM ,
followed by a public viewing of the pieces from 10 to midnight later that evening.

The auction will be held on eBay from February 10th and end on Saturday, February 17th @ Midnight Pacific Time.
